Secession is good for the Left and so is nullification. Secession would weaken the Amerikan empire whether Blue states, such as Vermont or Hawaii, where there are strong secession movements; or if in Red states, such as Texas or Utah, where there are also strong secession movements. According to Kirkpatrick Sale who is an anarchist author of a sympathetic history of SDS, sees no problem with the massive decentralization of power that secession would result in and has written on that. FDR, Wilson and Obama, all progressives who wanted a strong imperialist empire with a loss of civil liberties. The future, according to many who predict these things for a living, is city-states and small countries. The empire is dead, let's bury it

There are three classes on poverty, DHFabian--two in the political economy section, and one in global studies. But we're open for any suggestions you might have for more. Send us the links.

Louis H. Proyect, please let us know where. Many Latino and Asian immigrants support Republicans.Today's immigrants aren't refugees, but individuals who were able to acquire the credentials to make a good living, and who now tend to support the right wing. How do you define "working class"? (Middle class, incidentally, isn't a "state of mind," as many seem to think, but a designation for those with incomes in the $50,000-$80,000 range -- those folks who insisted welfare provided a luxurious life on roughly $4,000). Today's "progressives"/Democrats have pushed an anti-New Deal agenda s Clinton. Did you know that FDR's Social Security Act includes a provision for aid for women and children in poverty (later known as AFDC)? This was wiped out by Clinton who, incidentally, also took the first steps toward ending Social Security Disability, starting by targeting only the disabled who also happened to have minor children. Media marketed to liberal middle classers largely ignored these issues. I read that some 80% of middle classers support workfare replacement labor; who do they think are being replaced (at a fraction of the wages)? Waving the Middle Class Only banner served to deeply divide the "masses," pitting even middle class liberals against the rest of us. Every step of the way, we have seen "liberal" media promote, and the public embrace, a solidly anti-New Deal agenda (wrongly thinking that they, the bourgeoisie, won't suffer the consequences).

No "university of the left" could exclude the category of US poverty., which isn't included on this site's "categories" list. Our policies concerning the poor very directly impact (what's left of) the middle class, which impacts tax revenues and the ability of the US to avoid complete collapse. This generation chose policies/politics that has steadily been increasing poverty, shrinking the middle class -- and the middle class has the only thing resembling a people's voice in govt. When they're gone, so is the last of that power. We need a left media that addresses these complex issues. I read recently that some 80% of middle classers support mandatory (super-cheap/no rights) workfare replacement labor. Who do they think workfare is replacing? Media marketed to liberals today is actually so far to the right that they recently rewrote the historic Poor People's March on Washington, led by Rev. King -- censoring out the "Poor People's" part! This was the most blatant display of bourgeois arrogance we've seen in a while, but then again, bourgeois superiority sells. Self-proclaimed "liberals" in media (MSNBC, etc) are currently pushing H. Clinton for president -- an individual with a solid record of support for right-wing policies that have been wiping out the middle class (workfare labor, NAFTA, etc.). The US desperately needs a legitimate voice of the left to forcefully counter-act the reactionary propaganda and agenda.

New Deal and populist politics still exist among some working class whites and small farmers, and Latino and Asian immigration is growing.
