Mark Solomon makes many important points about the need to build socialist unity in the United States. He cites a number of important issues that most socialist organizations could agree on. These areas of agreement would be the basis of uniting. We could collectively develop one or more campaigns in these areas of agreement, as early steps in the unity building process.
The differences that exist between interested socialist organizations should be thought of as "works in progress," where further discussion, and the testing of different approaches in the real world is encouraged. All of our work must be done with respect for each other, including our differences. We should see unity building as a process, with specific steps that bring us closer together.
Initially, it might make sense to create a coalition of organizations around a core set of principles of unity, but allowing each organization to maintain its identity and pursue issues and strategies outside the core principles of unity as they see fit. Time and the unfolding of events will help us determine what works and what doesn't. As we spend more time working with each other around the core principles of unity, we will build trust, friendships, and positive working relationships. This, in turn, will draw our organizations more closely together, in a process that will result , step by step, in the creation of a strong, united socialist organization.
